Key Messages During an Interview

We need to communicate key messages that we want the audience to remember. We want to get the key messages accross, regardless of the journalist's questions, while focusing on our audience and our objectives.

There are several interview tactics we can use to communicate these messages effectively:

  • Analogies provide perspective and clarification. They can be colorful, creative and convey a lot of information without saying a lot.
  • Examples, statistics, and quotes or references to expert opinions, add credibility and substantiate your claims. You can also substantiate your claims by refering the journalist to other ashers to reaffirm your them. Make sure in advance that these ashers are willing to be interviewed as well.
  • Personal experience adds credibility and importance.
  • Anecdotes give perspective and add meaning to the message.
