#alt.suicide.bus.stop Irc Glossary

Irc

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. IRC consists of a number of connected servers forming a common network.

Channel

A channel is one room on irc where conversation takes place. A channel name always starts with a # character. This page is mainly concerned with the irc channel #alt.suicide.bus.stop

Nick

A nick is a person's nickname while online. You can change your nick to whatever you want using the command "/nick newnickname". You can register your nickname with Nickserv so that nobody else can use it.

Operator

A channel operator, in general, is someone who has the ability to control the running of the channel. They can kick or ban other users, set the topic, etc. Someone can be given operator status by another user, or automatically from Chanserv. If you're using mIRC as your irc client, the ops will have an @ symbol beside their name.

Kick

Kick means to boot someone out of the channel. They can rejoin immediately if they like though, and some people have their irc client set to auto-rejoin if kicked. It is considered bad form (in this channel, anyhow) to kick someone without good reason.

To kick someone using mIRC: highlight their name on the right-hand side of the screen. Then right-click and select control->kick.

Ban

Ban means to disallow someone from entering the channel. Usually when someone is banned, they get kicked at the same time. We try to be fairly tolerant in #alt.suicide.bus.stop, but if someone in the channel is being an idiot, go ahead and ban him.

Bans tend to be removed after a short period of time, after the person banned has cooled down, or a couple of days at most. If someone is so disruptive that they need to be banned permanently, an SOP can set an Akick to do it.

To ban someone using mIRC: highlight their name on the right-hand side of the screen. Then right-click and select control->ban,kick.

To unban someone: right-click on a blank part of the channel window. Select Channel Modes. Highlight the people on the Bans List that you want to remove, and click remove.

Akick

An akick is a permanent ban, and can only be set by SOPs. What happens is that when the banned individual rejoins the channel, Chanserv kicks and bans them automatically. Simply removing their name from the ban list won't help, since Chanserv will keep kicking them when they join. See the document on How to use Chanserv

Topic

The channel topic is usually displayed at the top of the channel window, and also when someone does a /list of channels. People here change the topic all the time to reflect what is happening in the channel at the moment, or just to add a funny saying. The topic should always have the words "pro-choice suicide chat" and the channel webpage address in it somewhere.

Channel modes

Each irc channel has several 'modes' attached to it. The modes are shown at the top of the channel window inside [ ] brackets. The modes we currently use are:

  • +c No colours allowed in the channel
  • +n No external messages allowed
  • +t Only channel operators may set the topic
Ignore

If someone is bothering you either in the channel, or in private messages, you can set them to ignore, and you'll never see their messages again.

To ignore someone using mIRC: highlight their name on the right-hand side of the screen. Then right-click and select control->ignore.

To un-ignore someone: highlight their name on the right-hand side of the screen. Then right-click and select control->unignore, -or- click on file->options->irc->control, then delete the entries for the people you want to unignore.

AOP

AOPs (or Auto-Operator) have Operator status bestowed on them automatically by Chanserv when they enter the channel. Only people with registered nicks can get AOP status.

SOP

SOPs (or Super-Operator) are given operator status automatically when they join the channel, and can also set or remove akicks, and give AOP status to other users. Only people with registered nicks can get SOP status.

Founder

The channel founder is the one who created the channel in the first place. (or more correctly, the one who holds the channel password). The channel founder for #alt.suicide.bus.stop is stbdchick. The succeeding founder (as it is termed) is SR-71A, who assumed Founder status in March of 2002.

Chanserv

Chanserv is one of the services offered by some irc networks. Chanserv allows people to manage irc channels, and controls who gets operator status automatically, akicks, and other things. For more information on Chanserv, check How to use Chanserv

Nickserv

Nickserv is another service. For more information on Nickserv, check How to use Nickserv

Memoserv

Memoserv is another service. For more information on Memoserv, check How to use Memoserv
